Sir John Coventry c. 1636 - 1685 Member of Parliament for Weymouth attempting to defend himself against an armed gang who set upon him for a jest he made in the Commons about the love affairs of King Charles II. He was held down and his nose was slit. Anger in the Commons about the incident caused the Coventry Act to be passed which declared acts of assault with mutilation were a felony.
