With these abstract gifts
Counting the time
As the dragnet shiftsComin here unaware that the one's with no material gifts
Sometimes most spirits leave riftsPost-It notes... and opposite shifts
Once in a blue moon we'll wake up in the same room
Thankful for these thy many giftsOur friends awarded her courage with gifts
Now as the nights grow longer and the season shiftsSwimming through iron limbs of the knighted stiffs
The skeletal remains of false praise, the slow decay of yesterday's recycled gifts

But he forgot the Lord who lifts
The beggar to the throne;
Nor knew that all Elijah's giftsBut he forgot the Lord who lifts
The beggar to the throne;
Nor knew that all Elijah's giftsWhere the mitred negro lifts
To his black cherub in the cloud
Abominable gifts,Now and henceforward serve unshod, through wet and wakeful shifts,
A present and oppressive God, but take, to aid, my gifts--With summer's voice come bearing summer's gifts.
Beguiled, the pale down-trodden aster lifts
